To Be Endlessly Cold Within [Rivalshipping, Vampire AU]
It had taken some time to get used to living a new life as a vampire. For someone who actively decried the supernatural, it wasn't easy to admit that he'd been overcome by some creature of the night in anything outside of a nightmare.
But he had ended up like this nearly half a year ago, waking up hospitalized with what looked like some kind of lesions at the joint of his neck and shoulder. From that point, it was only a matter of time before he shifted to his new reality. Trying to suppress it out of sheer force of will had only worked out so long, and deflecting his thirst onto a natural human cause had nearly ended in him attacking his brother. That was the last straw.
That was when Seto Kaiba gave in and took the first drink.
He had to, of course, curate his inner circle slightly--tell the ones most important to him what exactly his new life would entail. Mokuba...well, while he hadn't fully intuited it, had been concerned about his brother ever since the hospital stay. How could he not be? Seto had gradually lost color, energy, and most concerningly, weight since he'd been discharged. He barely ate and looked discomforted when he did, and drank liquids constantly. Honestly, figuring out Seto's needs had been jarring, but ultimately relieving.
Isono was the only other person who knew. He was the one responsible for acquiring blood for his boss, and he did so admirably. Kaiba never fed from the vein, no matter what. Even when his jaw ached around others, and his fangs itched in his skull, he'd instead bite down on something else. He kept a solid rubber ball in his desk for such occasions, and it didn't feel right, but at least with his bagged alternatives, he was doing alright.
Isono and Mokuba had floated the idea to him of perhaps feeding on small animals, and while the thought of it had made his fangs stretch past his lower lip and made his stomach twist as if he'd been starving for all his life...he declined. He didn't need it. There were other things to attend to.
And so he never really regained his weight despite a regular diet of blood.
But at least the company was running smoothly. Seto fought the urge to take a fully nocturnal sleep schedule, and instead positioned himself between worlds. He'd come into work around midnight, well before the sun rose, and leave once it had set. Work meetings were scheduled past dusk. Probably the most expensive alteration needed was to slowly have his office windows altered with UV blocking, the tinting of which could be controlled automatically with a single remote. He mostly kept the tinting at a lower level, so he could still enjoy the sun's brightness without harming himself.
His acclimations weren't perfect. Sometimes he ended up burning himself. Sometimes, the hunger was triggered by proximity to his employees...but for the most part, Kaiba had fallen into a holding pattern. Not yet fully healthy by vampire standards, but also not withering away.
Today, Kaiba was to be participating briefly in orientation for a very small handful of new hires. Isono would bring them up, to show them who they would be working for and have Kaiba offer a few words as he often did while he judged the merit of the hires individually. He always thought it unnecessary, but what he thought, and what was actually done? Those were two different things.
The first two hires went through their orientation interview without incident. Kaiba wasn't terribly impressed, but they'd do as entry to mid-level workers. Nothing really extraordinary to be brought to the the table.
He taps the logo on his lapel.
"Isono. Bring in the last candidate, and then prepare lunch," he ordered.
"Yes, Master Seto!"
The third candidate...they better be worth something.

Something though, something catches in his mind, and he frowns, brows furrowing. Something feels different, and he could have sworn...
No.
No, it's nothing. He clears his throat quietly, then turns away.
"Understood. I'll take care of it."
He walks to the door, ready to summon a nurse or a doctor to attend to Yuugi...but then he pauses.
"I invite you to my home for the night. Consider it."
And then he's gone, before Yuugi can say anything at all. He'll expect an answer when he gets back, but even saying those words was as difficult as assembling a prototype for which you have no point of reference, and he needs space, thanks.
no subject
It wasn't the fact that Kaiba offered to compensate, because in truth, that could have been due to his sense of honor. Same with his own dedication to him getting the utmost care.
The last part, though.
That...
That was...
"Mokuba, did...did you hear that?!" Yuugi grinned as soon as Kaiba was out of the room (though probably not out of earshot, because Vampire hearing). "I think we're starting to become friends!"
no subject
Seto's actions always have him wondering, sometimes for the worst. But this? This is fine, actually.
"I don't know about 'friends' in the same way you and I are friends, but maybe it's progress!"
Orrrrrr...maybe he still feels responsible for Yuugi. Dragging him to the coffee shop was Pegasus's idea, but Seto had gone along with it, hadn't he? He did that a lot, and maybe Yuugi was right to investigate what they were doing in the bathroom.
All Mokuba knew was that shortly after going back there, Seto and Pegasus had come out with an unconscious Yuugi. Seto didn't...really look as if he was all there, he seemed like he was in a daze, but he'd explained it honestly to Mokuba, in a way he never would with anyone else.
He was exhausted, worn out. Just finding that out was enough to have Mokuba write the next workday off for both of them, and call out sick to school. He hated to do that, because he knew it worried Seto, but he'd rather run the company for a day than let his brother and his new friend work themselves to death (or undeath, as the case may be).
"It'll be cool to have you over though--I can show you around!"
no subject
What were his feelings concerning Kaiba, anyway? He was strong, interesting, and even funny when he wanted to be. He was an inspiring presence that made him want to better himself, be stronger, be better than he was the day before.
He was an inspiration, and Yuugi liked being close to him.
He wanted...to be his friend. He wanted to be someone he could talk to and relate to.
...
He wanted to see him happy. Was that...strange? He didn't feel this way about his other friends, but it definitely was friendship. Or perhaps yearning for it.
His eyes lit up at Mokuba, though.
"Yeah! I'm looking forward to it."
no subject
Neither of the Kaibas got to be kids very much during their lives. Seto, of course, had afforded Mokuba as much opportunity as he could, and continues to do so. It's why Mokuba's still enrolled in school, while his position as VP was partially figure-headed.
He's the prince of a kingdom, so to speak, with his responsibilities stewarded by others. His brother, Isono...whichever seemed most appropriate.
Mokuba has schoolfriends. But as weird as it was, Yuugi was a little easier to connect to.
Before he can say anything else, the two of them are interrupted.
"I heard you."
Stiff. Cold.
Definitely Seto. Along with a doctor who would be checking over Yuugi and making a determination. Both individuals step into the room, and suddenly it's less about discussing their plans, and more about asking questions, taking vitals, and making a determination as to whether Yuugi was going to be discharged.
Kaiba sincerely hopes this goes quickly. He's tired of being out, and there's a frenetic impatience in the way he stands there, arms crossed and fingers drumming against his arms. He's...god, he's fidgeting. Mokuba can tell. Too much coffee, not metabolizing fast enough. He's hiding it pretty well, but a brother knows.
Good think you don't have a heart rate to be raised, bro, he thinks to himself wryly. Then you'd be in here too.
no subject
Mokuba probably didn't have many people come over, especially since his brother was so...himself.
Closed off.
Alone.
Him against the world, it seemed.
It was sad...sad, but understandable. Considering his position...
"Mr. Mutou has a high RBC count," the doctor said as the nurse pulled out Yuugi's IV, "We did other tests to check for an underlying cause, but none of the screenings came back with anything to worry about, which is strange."
Wait. Screenings?
They did tests on him while he was out? How long was he out, anyway?
"His RBC, Platelets, hemoglobin, and WBC counts are all high in equal measures; it's almost as though he's producing more blood than normal."
...What?
"But he's also very dehydrated, and has low iron, despite his other levels. I'm going to prescribe some Iron supplements. I'll give some samples on your way out so he can start taking them right away."
no subject
Kaiba frowns, which makes it look very much as if he's glaring at Yuugi. Why in the hell would he be producing more blood than usual? Kaiba hadn't fed on him since...well, since much earlier in the day, and he hadn't taken that much. Just enough to take the edge off his thirst.
More to the point, Yuugi shouldn't have more blood than usual, he should have less, right?
There's something that feels...wrong. Uncomfortable. He can't quite pinpoint where that feeling's coming from...
But he shakes it off, because it isn't important. What's important is getting out of this hospital. It's aggravating to be here, and he's endured it more than long enough! There's too much going on, too many scents, too much blood, and he's too keyed up right now. He's pretty sure if he doesn't get out of this place, out of his work clothes, and at least on a goddamn sofa, he's going to forcibly eject out of his own skin.
"Fine. I'll ensure that he's properly hydrated. Get him discharged already so I can leave."
Don't know why they didn't do that in the first place, he thinks to himself dourly, still drumming his fingers incessantly.
And yes, he sure did basically say "discharge Yuugi Mutou so I don't have to be here anymore."
Mokuba gets it. He can tell why his brother's acting that way, but he's still not amused by it. Not in the least. What if he just left Seto's laptop here? Would he learn anything if Mokuba did?
Probably not...
no subject
Nnngh, wasn't that like a big kick in the chest. He knew that Kaiba was the kind of person who said things coarsely, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt.
And really, wasn't Yuugi imposing already? He wanted to stop imposing, and maybe if he got discharged faster...
The doctor sighed.
"With all due respect, if you don't want to be here, Mr. Kaiba, you can easily step outside. Mr. Mutou won't be any longer than fifteen minutes, and I'm sure you aren't intending to wheel him out yourself."
Look, it was late and the doctor was low on patience. They were used to people like Kaiba, coming in with plenty of swagger and money to burn, but not enough tact.
He was the one who brought Mr. Mutou in, but they refused to let their patient deal with someone who was acting like a nine-year-old when they weren't the ones in the hospital bed.
"No, it's okay! I...would like to get this done as quickly as possible," Yuugi said. "I...I don't feel very comfortable in hospitals, either."
He shuffled in the bed, hands in his lap and eyes closed.
He wasn't lying, or trying to mindlessly defend Mr. Kaiba. He was speaking honestly.
no subject
It doesn't hurt as much as it would have when he was alive, but it still makes the older of the siblings grit his teeth and glare at the back of his brother's head. Noted. Definitely...fucking noted. But also damn it?!
"It's okay, take all the time you need! My brother's just tired, he can wait."
Seto, in fact, is the opposite of tired, but that doesn't matter. He's drumming his fingers, and glaring at every square inch of the room that's not occupied with a person, and not adding anything else to the conversation past:
"Be thorough."
There, happy?
no subject
The last time he was in a hospital for any amount of time was when his grandfather passed away. He could still smell the antiseptic. He could still...
He could still hear the whirr of the respirator.
The sound of the nurses speaking gently to him as he--
Yuugi's hands tightened on the blankets.
He wasn't ready to come back to a place like this. His shoulders tensed, his fists balled tight, and he stared down, down, refused to look up, couldn't look up, didn't want to look at anything--
"I..." He whispered. "Give me my papers, please. I'd like to leave."
Don't breathe heavily. Come on, it's fine. It's been years, it's fine, he's past this...
The doctor watched him for a moment, before nodding quickly and leaving the room.
If one watches the heart monitor he's still connected to, his heartrate was starting to rise.
Quickly.
no subject
Vampires have the predatory ability to smell changes in the blood, to tell how their prey was feeling. Maybe, they even preferred certain profiles of emotion in the blood.
Kaiba, the one who had denied himself until this man came into his life, could read the book written in Yuugi's blood, and it discomforts him.
"If you don't calm down, they may change their minds about keeping you here," he says quietly. "Breathe."
He says it commandingly, despite his low tone.
no subject
Stirs something in his blood, perhaps; he didn't have the presence of mind to think about it, but a calm Yuugi would look back on this moment and consider exactly what this meant.
His muscles relax as though on command, and his eyes close.
He breathes.
Focuses on the voice that feels so close and yet so far away, whispering yet not. Speaking inside his heart and yet not.
If he focuses on it, he can almost forget the smell that assaults his nostrils, the sound of the beeping machinery.
"Y-yes." He breathes. "Okay."
One breath...Then another.
Another.
Another.
His heartrate is starting to lower, even as his cheeks brighten with...exertion? His O2 levels seem fine, but his blood pressure is rising even as he's calming down.
Tight. That sensor was too tight on his finger.
With a slight growl, Yuugi removes it.
no subject
His jaw starts to ache.
No.
He's not hungry. In fact, he's never felt so satisfied since he'd become a vampire, and yet...he's reacting out of instinct. And as for Yuugi, he's reacting in a way that makes it worse. If Kaiba was inclined to worry, he wouldn't say he was worrying about Yuugi himself, but of where this was happening.
Yuugi's blood thrums as if it's surging through a channel far too narrow. A quick glance at the monitors show what Kaiba can hear and feel with his senses, moments before Yuugi pulls the sensor off.
He remembers the office. He remembers...taking Yuugi's blood there. He remembers the taste, and it makes him swallow hard now, even though he wasn't thirsty. He's never felt so simultaneously enticed and interested, while knowing he doesn't need what's bubbling up in the man's body.
Indulgence.
That's what his mind is on now.
Not a need. A want.
"I...have to leave," he says, his voice distant. "I'll meet you at home."
Now his chest rises and falls with quick, hard-to-temper breaths. His face is splotched with a bruiselike flush of barely-oxygenated blood. Enough is in him to color his cheeks.
"Mokuba...I'll call Isono for you."
He has to go now. He does. He'll deal with this in his home. And he's taking the scenic route to do so, to calm his ass down.
Though good to his word, once Yuugi's discharged, they'll find Isono downstairs and ready to drive them to the Kaiba manor. He looks a little ruffled, but he'll be alright.
no subject
What was that? What the hell was his reaction? Had he ever been...flushed before? Not since he'd known him, and yet his color looked almost healthy.
He thought about it as he got his papers, dizzily stumbling into the wheelchair as he waved off any concern.
"I'm just feeling a bit tired," he said. "Don't worry. I'll rest."
He thought about it as he sat in the car.
As they drove back to the manor.
Even as he stared blankly out the window at the roads that whizzed by...
How did Kaiba get that much color in his face? Did that little bit of blood he gave him in the office really help that much?
Nnngh, his neck itched.
no subject
...Well, when the others arrive, it's like he's being attacked again, the thrum of Yuugi's too-loud heartbeat in his ears.
God. Damn it.
Don't mind him, he's in the living room reading a book with such a scowl that anyone would think he was angry at the book itself.
Mokuba leads Yuugi in, moving slow, looking worried. His brother and the new hire are gonna end up giving him wrinkles. As for Isono, he's just, uh. He's going to use one of the guest rooms, because these children are definitely giving him wrinkles. The closer he stays, the better, and Mokuba agrees.
"C'mon Yuugi, let's head in--oh. Seto, I didn't think you'd be out here."
Kaiba sighs loudly, snapping the book shut. The sound is grating, but not as grating as Yuugi's heartbeat. Of course they'd decided to come to the living room first. Honestly, it was Seto's mistake, picking the obvious destination, right?
"Mokuba, would you give us a moment?" he asks in annoyance. "Don't worry, I'm not going to kill him, but I would like some privacy."
Well...
At least he's honest, right?
no subject
Mokuba glanced at Yuugi, but he just smiled and shook his head.
"Don't worry, it's okay."
His head throbbed, and his neck, nnnh. It started to hurt. Right along the jugular, too. What was this? It was like something was desperately trying to come out...
Even his nose felt pressure on the inside.
"I'll be all right."
He wasn't looking too good. If anything, he seemed a bit dizzy. He'd just. Sit on the couch. Yeah.
Mokuba watched him for a moment. Then Kaiba. Then Yuugi again.
Maybe they should have left him at the hospital...he didn't want to be there, but he didn't exactly look good, either. His cheeks were so red, and his eyes were almost glassy.
...
He'd stay nearby. He wouldn't listen in, but...He'd stay in an adjacent room. Just in case.
"Okay..." Mokuba said, "Just. Be nice. He doesn't look well."
no subject
As if he was stupid.
Seto knows Mokuba isn't stupid. But they have trust between them, and that trust is what gets Mokuba to leave, if not far.
And once he's out of the room, Kaiba immediately closes the distance between himself and Yuugi.
"You...you're infuriating," he mutters, snatching one of Yuugi's arms up. The same he'd used before. And the same one he'd use again. "You're going to end up having a heart attack if you stay close to me.
You're making your problems my problems, Mutou."
Yuugi's wrist feels...heated, almost. His veins seem to stand out stark against his skin, a temptation that Kaiba could, at this point, resist. But resisting is still painful, and Yuugi's suffering a very clear hypertensive episode.
There's a simple way to fix that. An effective, if unorthodox method.
"I'm going to bite you. Do not, and I cannot stress this enough, keep making it weird. I don't want you to do what I tell you like some puppet!"
Hey, so. He notices when you do that, Yuugi. And he doesn't like it, which might be surprising. But he doesn't want some waif melting in his grip, just because he was a vampire! Just because...what, he had some compulsion built into him that Yuugi wanted to follow?
Fuck that. Stop that shit. He can't turn it off since he doesn't know how he's doing it, so resist it or something!
"Pretend you have agency, just this once, won't you?"
no subject
Pretend you have agency.
Pretend you have agency.
What the fuck did he even mean by that?! Did he think Yuugi wanted him to just fall over for him like this? Did he think he liked doing it? What kind of person did he think Yuugi was, anyway?!
Even though his glassy eyes stared at him, there was life in them. Frustration. The bite of his lip, the clench of a fist.
The fierce pull of a hand as he tried to snatch his hand back from his grip.
His leg bounced.
"Pretend I have agency?" He asked. "You think that's what this is? You think I'm just some emptyheaded idiot that can't do anything for himself?"
His head hurt. His head hurt.
"You think I want to fall apart?" Yuugi snapped back with a voice that was too loud, too strong, too, too-- "I do fight it. Every. Single. Time! Have you ever stood on the other side of a mirror and watched yourself do things you never wanted to do and you have no power to fight back?!"
He coughed; he tasted copper on his lips, but no. He didn't care. He barely noticed.
"Even now! All I want to do is fall over for you, and I hate it! I want to control my own body, because I'm not...I'm not a doll!"
Another cough.
Something clung to the side of his mouth; something red.
"I belong to me, just like you belong to you! Neither of us are puppets for someone else to play with; not our bodies, and not anyone else!"
no subject
That's new.
Kaiba's taken aback enough that he loses grip on Yuugi's wrist, staring at him has, for the first time since they'd met, the man shows some teeth. He fights back against Kaiba, admittedly with his words, but at least he's fighting, and this isn't some silly game of bluffs, it's life.
Kaiba's eyes, which had been flickering between red and blue, finally settle on the former, although his pupils remain oddly slitlike. Yuugi coughs, and blood spills on his lips.
Blood.
Fuck, he's...he's bleeding?!
Several things catch Kaiba's attention about that. One, whatever was going on, biologically, was coming to a head, and Yuugi was wasting time arguing with him about his phrasing, when he was going to end up giving himself heart failure or an aneurysm, whichever happened first.
Two, his words trigger something in Kaiba's subconscious, a fear that he's lived with for all of his life. The fear of being controlled, of being shackled and unable to control his own fate.
And three...that he definitely found part of Yuugi's diatribe oddly intriguing.
(attractive?)
Intriguing!
But he needs to shut the hell up, right now, so Kaiba acts under instinct. Vampire instinct, and impulse to shut the idiot up.
He snatches both of Yuugi's wrists in his hands, then immediately leans in and presses a bruising kiss to his lips. It's not elegant. It's not skillful. It's a distraction, and also an excuse to lap at the blood on Yuugi's lips.
For better or worse, it's fast. He uses the moment of what he assumes will be surprise to finally pull away and bite Yuugi's wrist, piercing the vein and--
Oh. Oh fuck, oh shit--
That's so much fucking blood, Seto practically chokes on it, before starts swallowing it down, refusing to let a single drop of it spill on his very expensive furniture.
no subject
That
...
That was Seto Kaiba kissing Yuugi Mutou on the lips. That was not just being kissed, but it was an inelegant, awkward, bruising kiss that was just as powerful as the man that was standing in front of him.
The man who just bit his wrist and was trying to suck his blood down as it practically squirted into his mouth like a juicy orange.
What the fuck?
What the actual fuck was going on?
"What's going on with my body...?" He whispered, entirely to himself.
High RBC. More blood than usual, and now he was...
"Feel...f-full..."
...What was that? He said that at one point, didn't he? But when? Why? Was it...did it have to do with this?
The headache faded, and his cheeks began lighten...
And dripped out of his nose and onto his shirt.
(At least it didn't get on the furniture?)
no subject
He's not sure if he can take much more of it. Whereas the reddening of Yuugi's face is starting to fade, it's evidently transferring over to Kaiba, and now he's dizzy.
Some of that is the act of drinking blood directly from a human, and the euphoric sensation that goes along with it. But the rest of it is being way too full of blood. It doesn't make sense, scientifically speaking he should be able to drain a man dry, but he was struggling with Yuugi like this and--
--and he still managed to have a nosebleed? The audacity actually!
Kaiba's pissed enough to draw more, growling against Yuugi's wrist. Fine, you want to play games, Mutou? He'll win against your idiotic body, stupidly producing all this blood, because he's not a loser!
Stop bleeding you asshole!
no subject
Yuugi had the sense to use the wrist Kaiba wasn't biting to grab his own shirt and hold his nose with it in an attempt to stop the bleeding, but that only...
Oh.
That only made it worse.
"What the fuck. What the fuck?!"
That was the voice of a man who clearly did not know what was going on with his own body. Panic? Anxiety? Frustration? Anger? Negative emotions that Yuugi Mutou tried to hide at all times under lock and key?
You fucking bet.
"Dammit...dammit...Stop bleeding, dammit!"
Yeah, because that was going to work.
At least it got on his shirt instead? And it did...eventually...seem to slow up?
His wrist was also not squirting now! Progress!
no subject
But all he can think about is the blood, the flow, and the beat of Yuugi's heart in his own breast, the ache in his temples as he drank, and drank, and...finally...he pulled away, and you know, that cut's not gonna heal fast. Not enough vampire spit on it, but Kaiba just drops back onto the couch, blood staining his lips and teeth. He's definitely not in any position to do much about it.
This is the vampire equivalent of overeating, isn't it? The euphoria's not enough to cover the ache in his body as it tries to process all of...all of that. All of Yuugi Mutou, apparently.
Or most of him, at least?
That was only most of him?
"Ghhh."
He's just gonna lay on the couch, thanks. Fuck you, Yuugi. He won.
no subject
How articulate, Yuugi. But it was hard to be articulate when you were feeling dizzy from losing so much blood that fast. Even with his blood going down to normal levels and his blood pressure falling, nobody could handle that without...
...
Flopping on the floor, face-down.
Was the poor guy even conscious?
"Fuck my stupid body."
...Yeah, he was at least partially conscious.
no subject
Oh god. Oh fuck, sitting up is such a terrible idea. Kaiba's pretty sure if he moves too much he's going to vomit blood, and that really will ruin his furniture.
But as much of a dick as he is, he's not leaving Yuugi on the floor like that. So despite his body's protests, he shuffles to his feet and continues to make extremely poor decisions, including stooping down to pick Yuugi up off the floor as gently as possible and deposit him back on the couch in a position less likely to end with him back on the floor. Kaiba then takes a seat again.
...Before flopping back over. No. Sitting is too much.
"On that, we can wholeheartedly agree," he mutters to Yuugi's curse of his own body. "Next time...just bleed it out somewhere else."
"...What the fuck happened in here?!"
Mokuba heard the sound of someone hitting the ground. Of course he's standing there, looking absolutely aghast at the site of his brother with a mouth stained with blood, and Yuugi looking a step from passing out. Actually they both did.
Seto manages to glare at his brother.
"Language."
