"You should have the feeding tube taken out today, but you'll probably be on a liquid diet for a bit. I can ask the doctor for a nutrient shake or something, though, if you want."

As for his knees...nnnngh. How did you tell someone that their legs were mangled and they'd likely need knee replacements? And then months of physical therapy?
